IRFFA SUMMER MEETING AT ROCK HARBOR
IRFFA Group picture at the guest house
For the 8th
consecutive year IRFFA held a summer meeting on Isle Royale. This year we held
it at Rock Harbor Lodge at the historic Guest House, one of the original
buildings going back to the days when the lodge was owned by the Farmer family.
Kim Alexander and the staff at Rock Harbor Lodge did a great job making us feel
at home and catering a very nice meal for us, which was open to the public.

Following our
meeting, IRFFA put on the evening program at the auditorium. We were assisted by
NPS ranger Karena Schmidt, who is charge of the interpretive programs at Rock
Harbor. Our program was a panel discussion led by Tom Gale. The panel consisted

RESTORATION OF “BIG” BOAT HOUSE CONTINUED IN 2008
By David C. Barnum (
dcbarnum@aol.com )
This labor of
love entered its fourth year. Our goal is to save this unique Lake Superior
structure from falling into the Lake. The “big boat house” as it is known was
built around 1907. This has been an expensive project that has been sponsored by
the Barnum family and the Isle Royale Families and Friends Association. In 2005
one crib was replaced and in 2006 two more were placed, all on the outside south
section of the boat house. In 2007 little work was done. This year two large
cribs were replaced on the inside or north section of the boathouse. There
remains one large crib that has to be replaced which is located on the north
east section of the boat house. We are hopeful to complete it next summer.
This year,
along with the regular professional crew of Ely and Peter Salyards, Scott
Mershon and Chris Edwardson, we had three new volunteers. Jake and Sarah Schmidt
and Bill Starkey. In order to complete both cribs, two trips had to be made to
the island. One in June to do the prep work and the other in July to jack up the
boathouse, build the cribs and install them. All told about 12 full days of work
were required. Most of the time the weather was unseasonably cool with very cold
water. That made the project more challenging this year than in years past.
Toward the end
of our work we invited all of the Windigo staff along with researchers out for a
tour of Washington and Barnum Islands followed by dinner. The whole harbor had a
fun time. We hope to make this an annual event.
