NPS
ISSUES VOLUNTEER PERMITS TO SOME FAMILY MEMBERS
Last summer
the Superintendent indicated that personal property had to be removed and NPS
padlocks would be put on some of the cabins used by some original family
members. Since last summer, NPS has issued one and two year Volunteer Agreements
to some of those families. It is still unclear what the long term future holds
for original families who have been in cabins for many generations. NPS
continues to work on a Cultural Resource Management Plan. It is likely that the
fate of the cabins and the continued opportunity of families to use cabins going
back over 100 years will be decided in this plan.
CAPE CODE NATIONAL
SEASHORE DUNE SHACK PLAN AND ASSESSMENT
IRFFA has been
following a number of similar situations in several other National Parks,
including Sequia National Park, Biscayane Bay National Park and Cape Cod
National Park. Late April NPS issued the "Dune Shack Historic District
Preservation and Use Plan. There are many similarities in the Dune Shack
community and the Isle Royale community. The NPS report can be found here:

RESTORATION OF THE “BIG” BOAT HOUSE 2009
We had hoped to finish the last crib this summer.
However, we have had to push back the completion date by one year. We will still
be doing some prep work this summer. The “professionals” Scott Mershon, Chris
Edwards, Chip and Peter Salyards will be on Barnum Island for a few days in late
June.
